A Stranger in a Strange Land Part 4
After Matt got off his shift we set out to make a night of it.
To start the evening, we hit this pizza joint called Orchidea, which sadly no longer exists in the East Village.
“Trust me Charlie, you’re gonna love this pizza.
Well, sure enough the waitress brought us this steaming hot, ooey gooey pizza piled high with every carcinogenic fatty meat known to Matt.
I remember it had bacon on it which was a first for me. Seriously BACON?! My God, whoever thought adding this savory ingredient must have been a genius because it was sublime. Nowadays, you can find bacon on just about everything but I’ll never forget my initial surprise of tasting it on pizza for the first time.

Matt suggested we head up to the upper East side to hit this punk/New Wave Club he knew about.
We had to take another subway uptown and while waiting I saw a bunch of black teenagers chasing a white dude on the opposite platform. One of his pursuers was yelling like a cowboy (“Yeehaw! Run motherfucker!!”) as he whirled a long bike chain over his head like a lariat. Every so often when he got the kid cornered he’d strike a metal dumpster with a loud BANG and the poor white guy would jump out of the way and run away even faster with his pursuers hot on his trail..
Our train pulled in and I lost sight of the chase.
No one around at the station seemed to be concerned or bothered. And quite frankly I didn’t want to get involved.
But Man, I hope they never caught that kid.
